How To Care For Phalaenopsis Orchids
One of the simplest and most rewarding orchids to grow is the phalaenopsis orchid. Phalaenopsis orchids also happen to be one of America's favorite orchids. This type of orchid easily adapts to the indoor environment of a home or office. The phalaenopsis orchid is also known as the moth orchid and is a popular orchid for beginners to grow. Their flowers can last for several months, and a well-grown plant can flower several times a year. The moth orchid's season begins in winter and continues through spring.
Light Requirements:
Proper lighting is a must for successful cultivation of this genus. Phalaenopsis benefit the most in either an east or a lightly shaded south facing window. A word of caution for windows facing west, it become very hot during late spring through to early fall and the foliage on your Phalaenopsis may burn. If absolutely necessary, artificial lighting may be utilized to provide the plant with enough light. Using light meter, 1,000 to 1,500 foot-candles is recommended.
Temperature Requirements:
Phalaenopsis orchids prefer a warm environment. A consistent temperature of about 60-65 degrees at night and 75 to 85 degrees during the day is ideal because warmer conditions help the plant to maximize growth throughout the year. A drop in the evening temperatures during early fall would be beneficial to initiate flower spikes. Phalaenopsis orchids thrive under normal household temperatures.
Water Requirements:
Taking temperature conditions into consideration, the phalaenopsis orchid should be watered about once or twice a week. During the summer, the orchid should be water every 4-5 days. The rule of thumb for watering is, "More heat, more water. Less heat, less water." Phalaenopsis should be kept on the moist side. But in no way does this mean that they should be left soaking in water. The ideal watering time is early in the day so that the foliage has a chance to dry by nightfall.
Humidity Requirements:
Phalaenopsis orchids require approximately 50% humidity. Often, a kitchen or bathroom will provide the desired humidity. A humidity tray may be used if the orchid is in another location in the house.
Fertilizing Requirements:
Regular fertilization is needed for this orchid. It is recommended to pre-water the orchids if the potting media is dry before applying the diluted nutrient solution.
Potting Requirements:
Repotting should take place every two years. Preferably, the phalaenopsis orchid should be repotted immediately after flowering.
Pests:
Common pests associated with phalaenopsis are scales, mealy bugs, spider mites, etc. A time-release insecticide is the most efficient pest control method.
