Orchid Plant Guide

Your Vanda Orchid Resource

For a plant that is so captivating, the monopodial vanda orchids are relatively easy to cultivate. A vandal orchid's growth emerges from the crown of the plant. Vanda orchid flowers are available in vivid colors such as blue, red, orange, and yellow. The flower spikes of this type of orchicd are the ones which usually carry 8-10 blooms, which arises from the base of the leaves and last for several weeks.

Lighting

An abundance of light exposure is a must for vanda orchids. The direct morning and late afternoon sun are ideal for vandas, provided the exposure occurs incrementally. The Vanda plants need to adapt slowly to any increase in lighting. Full morning sun is the best for vandas.

Temperature

Vanda orchids benefit the most from warmer temperatures. These plants thrive when the evening temperature is between 55-70°F and daytime temperature between 65-95°F.

Watering:

There is a simple rule, 'more heat, more water'! Depending upon the temperature, vandas which are grown in pots should be watered weekly or semimonthly. During the summer, vanda orchids may need water every 4-5 days. Vandas which call baskets home will need water often. Like other orchids, vandas should always dry out in between watering. Always try to water the plants early in the day so that the foliage will be dry by nightfall.

Humidity

Vandas generally prefer 60 to 80% humidity. A high humidity is very essential during the growing season which ranges from early spring through late fall. During the summers the watering should be supplemented with daily misting of the leaves.

Fertilizer

Regular fertilization is necessary for vandas.

Potting

Vandas can be grown in pots easily. The vandas which are grown in pots should be repotted once every two years. The recommended time to repot is during spring.
